Course Overview
Just as vocabulary is fundamental to learning any spoken language, a strong vocabulary of riffs is essential to developing fluency in jazz. This 14 segment course is designed to introduce students to three foundational jazz riffs that serve as core building blocks for improvisation.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Accurately perform three essential jazz riffs from memory.
- Apply each riff in varied rhythmic contexts.
- Modify riffs through changes in rhythm, articulation, and ending notes.
- Incorporate riffs into improvisational settings with confidence.
Instructional Approach
The course follows a progressive, application-based learning model:
- Direct Instruction – Each riff is taught note-for-note, ensuring accuracy and technical understanding.
- Contextual Demonstration – The riff is then presented within a jam setting, highlighting practical application.
- Interactive Practice – Students engage in “riff trading” exercises, alternating phrases with the instructor to reinforce learning through active use.
Learning Outcomes
Students will not only master three important riffs but also be taught the skills necessary to adapt them creatively. This includes altering rhythmic placement, experimenting with phrasing, and developing personalized variations. Ultimately, learners will expand their improvisational vocabulary and strengthen their foundation for future jazz study.
